Firearms Safety Certification Update – Effective April 2, 2026
Updated training requirements will take effect for firearms safety certification in Massachusetts. These changes will include additional instruction and live fire testing in order to obtain the safety certificate required for a License to Carry (LTC) application.
What this means for you:
• If you obtained your License to Carry prior to August 1, 2024, you are not required to complete the updated training.
• If you applied for an LTC after August 1, 2024, but completed your firearms safety course prior to April 2, 2026, you will be required to complete the updated training before your next renewal.
Important clarification:
The date you completed your firearms safety course is what determines whether you are required to take the updated training, not the date of your scheduled appointment.
While we are encouraged to see many citizens exercising their Second Amendment rights, please be aware that appointment dates will not impact the additional training requirement.
